Popular Nursery Decorating Ideas – Side by Side Product Comparison
By Mark Ludwig
When it comes to decorating a baby nursery, the walls are probably the easiest, most affordable, and largest impact area in the room. There are several categories of products that you can consider. Some of the most popular are Stickers, Wall Art, Movable Murals, and Painted Murals. Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of those popular nursery decorating choices.
Stickers. Stickers provide nice character silhouettes. Meaning, they have shapes which are important in a child’s development. Stickers are not the most durable choice, so be careful to keep them out of children’s reach. Certainly an advantage of stickers is the ease of install. However, removal is much more difficult especially after a long time. There are better adhesives out there which make removal slightly easier. If you are tire of the same look, stickers are not a great option for movability. In fact, you are better off taking the old ones down and starting with fresh ones to create a new look. Probably the single biggest reason why stickers are popular is price. They are by far the cheapest option for decorating a nursery room wall. Consider you get what you pay for. As mentioned before, surface damage to the walls is likely. An advantage is that stickers often come in a themed experience. This allows you to pull together the entire room. Another advantage of stickers is that no tools are required for installation. Although economically, at the end of the day, stickers do not provide much wall coverage and therefore limited impact to the room.
Wall Art. Wall art would be considered an upgrade from stickers. Although wall art has a more professional look than stickers, the art itself is framed and therefore square. In other words, there are not characters silhouettes. From a durability standpoint, wall art is a great choice. Ease of install and ease of removal are strong as well. Typically one nail hole will do it. The more wall art you hang the more those holes add up. So be prepared to repair some wall damage when your child outgrows the artwork. Price is certainly higher than stickers. An individual piece of wall art can range anywhere from $20 to $200 depending on the name. If you only purchase 1-2 pieces, it can be reasonable. If you are looking for more impact, wall art can add up and be a more expensive alternative. Typically there are more limited choices for a themed experience with wall art. Unless of course you purchase several pieces. Tools are required, although most folks own a hammer and level. Keep in mind wall art looks professional, but not necessary the most fun or impactful in a baby’s room.
Movable Murals. Movable murals are a relatively new category that has come on the baby nursery decor scene as of late. The themed characters provide a very distinct character silhouette and are more durable than stickers. Most movable murals utilize special adhesive strips so that ease of install and ease of removal are very easy. Because of this, the characters are movable which means you can change up the look of the room at any time. Price wise, movable murals are more expense than stickers, but for the amount of wall coverage a more economical choice than wall art. Most sets come in a themed experience and have thickness which provides a cool three dimensional look. If the adhesives strips are includes, then no tools are required which is nice. Probably second only to painted murals, movable murals provide the most wall coverage and significant impact to the nursery room.
Painted Murals. Painted murals provide an engaging character silhouette. And since the product is just paint, is a rather durable option. Unless you are an artist, ease of install is difficult. Ease of removal just requires another can of paint, but after spending that much money, you probably won’t want to to that. Painted murals do provide a nice impact to the overall room decor, but obviously are not movable. The biggest downside to painted murals is the price. A professional artist can cost anywhere from $500 to well over $1000 for one wall. If your budget allows, it is highly recommend to go with a professional artist versus trying to do yourself. Paint by numbers sounds simple, but your kids will know the difference.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each category of nursery decor depending on your budget and goal for the room. The best suggestion is to rank your favorite nursery decor side by side and evaluate on the considerations which are most important to you.
